 The Enigma of Beauty

The Enigma of Beauty

«Devouring Time, blunt thou the lion’s paws,
And make the earth devour her own sweet brood;
Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger’s jaws,
And burn the long-lived phoenix in her blood;»
(W. Shakespeare, Sonnet no. 19)

Over Beauty, there has always hung the cloud of destiny and all-devouring time. Beauty has been invoked, re-figured and described since antiquity as a fleeting moment of happiness and the inexhaustible fullness of life, doomed from the start to a redemptive yet tragic end.

In this interpretation by Rino Stefano Tagliafierro, this beauty is brought back to the expressive force of gestures that he springs from the immobility of canvas, animating a sentiment lost to the fixedness masterpieces. Its as though these images which the history of art has consigned to us as frozen movement can today come back to life thanks to the fire of digital invention.

A series of well selected images from the tradition of pictorial beauty are appropriated, (from the renaissance to the symbolism of the late 1800s, through Mannerism, Pastoralism, Romanticism and Neo-classicism) with the intention of retracing the sentiment beneath the veil of appearance.

An inspiration that returns to us the sense of one fallen, and the existential brevity that the author interprets as tragic dignity, with an unenchanted eye able to capture the profoundest sense of the image.

Beauty in this interpretation is the silent companion of Life , inexorably leading from the smile of the baby, through erotic ecstasies to the grimaces of pain that close a cycle destined to repeat ad infinitum.

They are, from the inception of a romantic sunrise in which big black birds fly to the final sunset beyond gothic ruins that complete the piece, a work of fleeting time.

this may all seem random. but i have to write this book and it all links in 🙂

oooh! BQ: whats ur fav mcr video/ song and why (:

O.o i think i need to cut down the caffiene my hands are shaking.

  2. So, I just got finished completing Portal 2… and I just can’t believe how amazing the game is… I finished it in about 2 days – but I’ve never played a Portal game before (I had the choice between Portal 1 and Portal 2, I chose the latter because people said it was longer).

Honestly, words can’t explain how amazing the game was for me… and it’s definitely in the top 3 games I’ve ever played. Zelda OOC is probably number 1, followed by Portal 2… I haven’t had that much fun with a video game since I played games on N64 with I was 9, 10, 11 years old… except.. the game really made you think… it’s a game that I most likely would not have been able to complete when I was younger (as fast as I did).

I love how Valve gets everything right with their games… the game is perfect, it’s a FPS, but you don’t shoot/kill anyone with a gun… the portal idea is absolutely unique, the characters are memorable, lovable, super sarcastic, and hilarious. I think they did everything perfectly…

My favorite thing about the game is the overall futuristic/robot theme it had. The robots and the levels in the game are quite literally what comes to mind when I think about “futuristic robots/the future in general”. The maps and levels just felt so detailed, so real… the gigantic laboratory really captured that amazing feeling… and so did the extremely unique and creatively designed robots in the game. If it weren’t for the nostalgic value attached to Zelda Ocarina of Time, I’d probably say that Portal 2 is the best game I’ve ever played in my life.

I just wish other game developers took notes of everything in Portal 2. Games that force you to think are much more rewarding… just as long as you accompany the player with amazing graphics, creative storyline/theme, engaging characters, and challenging but doable puzzle solving, they will definitely fall in love with the game. I think that’s why I liked Zelda so much, too — because it was a puzzle solving game in a sense. Puzzle solving, adventure platform games are the way to go.

Has anyone played/completed Portal 2 yet? How did you feel about the game?

The true test of the greatness of a work of art is its ability to be understood by the masses.

The greatness and the beauty of art need not be vindicated by a mass fan base for it.Most of the critically acclaimed piece of art aren’t like by the masses.
    .
As Oscar Wilde said,”Everything popular is wrong”.Though I do not resonate with that quote entirely,I surely believe that you need not have a mass appeal to be classified as an artistic beauty. .For example, the critically acclaimed film,’Memento’ did not rope in good box office collection .But once critics and patrons of artistic cinema profoundly appreciated this film in the media, there was a good increase in the home video sales.Masses are easily influenced by mouth talk.
    .
    .
There are plenty other films which truly move our soul upon watching but fail miserably at the box office .That’s because majority of the masses view art as a business. As a source of entertainment.Sure, entertainment can be subjective. But for the majority of them,it’s just sheer prosaic films with action set pieces or laughter riot.
    .

Art is subjective.my friends and I do not enjoy watching classic European paintings of the 60’s and 70’s.But my father finds it thoroughly entertaining. The way all 5 fingers aren’t the same, every art piece cannot be appreciated by everybody. That does not make it unworthy of greatness. At the same time, art pieces with universal mass appeal need not be the greatest work of art.
    .

Another observation of mine is that, unless you adore the profession or yourself are into work, one cannot judge the artistic quality. For an aspiring filmmaker like myself, watching Art films like ‘Tree of life’ or ‘Ship of Theseus’ feels amazing. But ,will my friends want to spend a considerable amount of money and time on art flicks or a medieval age museum? They’d rather spend the money on a action packed 3-d movie.
They actually have a pretty solid reason themselves. When you know it’s not going to entertain you,why to waste the hard earned money? It’s all about worth of the money these days.

    .
Finally,I would say,a true test of the greatness of a work of art should be the art itself. For any great art piece, they are people who dislike it as much the fan base it would have.

  4. Did you see that ABC news clip on Yahoo’s front page today? Something about a baby being saved from an irresponsible baby sitter by a parrot.

The parrot sensed that the baby was in danger and squawked to get attention. According to the video, what was particularly interesting about this parrot isnt the fact that he squawked so much as -what- he squawked. He supposedly squawked “baby, baby” over and over again.

    It got me thinking…

Why would a parrot do that? Why would he squawk in the first place? What does a separate human life, a baby, a potential threat to frightened little caged birds everywhere, what would prompt him to care in the first place? What would prompt him to react in the first place?

And in such of a deliberate and intentional way, no less… he learned a word, knew what it meant, and knew it was needed… was able to recall it and apply it.

I know what people will say… it was just mindless animal instinct. I know. But how is that different than a computer, or the intellectual genius that sets humans apart from animals? We learn, process and interpret data and sensory perception. And we react. Perhaps not so predictably as a computer or a bird, but we do nonetheless.

I thought to myself, is it really the capacity to learn and generalize and apply our knowledge that makes us a sapient species distinguishing us from the animal kingdom, as so many people would argue? Or is it something else?

Is it really in a birds instinctive behavior to look after a human baby and potential threat to its life… particularly if it lacks affectionate emotional connection?

Perhaps, instead, what sets sapient from non-sapient species is the capacity to over come and surpass instinct. The human capacity to reason from knowledge and consequently giving us the ability to face emotion and instinct down, to face our fears and basic instinctive desires to fight, run, hide, etc., that human capacity is hardly different than a parrot who chooses to yell for help when it has no evolutionary instinctive impulse to do so.

If there is some essence to art, does this disqualify some things as being art?

  14. I have been feeling really depressed and no matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to shake it. Let me explain I am a 14 year old homeschooler, I have 7 siblings all but one are older than me (4 girls & 3 boys) and I HATE homeschooling, the only problem is my parents can’t afford a good high school so I have never complained, they have no idea how much I appall it. All my life I have been what some people call a social butterfly, someone who can make friends with anyone. Sure I can make friend through my online program but I hate conversing online I would like a face to face, but most of the people from my online school are in other states so a meeting isn’t an option. I am depressed because my brother who is 2 years old than me goes to a High School, (my parents just can’t handle homeschooling the boys passed middle school) so all the boys have gone to a High School and the girls being much more obedient have all been home-schooled, the problem is that I’m not like my sisters. All my life I have been the odd sheep like my sisters, all musicians and great with whatever instrument they pick up I only sing, they are all great at school and geniuses at math (one graduated college at 19 the other was valedictorian of her online school and is currently attending college on full scholarship, and it’s too early to tell about my younger sister) I have to work to get a B on math. The longer I hold in my feelings the more morose I become and I have asked my mom why older brother goes to school and, I’m quoting here, she said “Because we are hardly paying anything for him, he’s brilliant and they are lucky to have him, because he makes the school look good.” Every time my parents talk about my siblings they always give high praises for example, Ellie is going to college full time for being a violin prodigy (she was concert master since she was 13 to 20 year olds), Tess is a private tutor and piano instructor, Martin is the best baseball player in the league, Jose is also a private tutor and caretaker, Arron is the 4.0 gpa with honors in everything, Anita is another violin and singer protégé (for being 9 she can really harmonize) and me I’m just artsy (not lying that is actually how they describe me btw those aren’t their real names). I know they don’t hate me it’s just all they see are academic grades not the fact I have twice as many talents as any of my siblings I can cook I make breakfast for everyone, bake not once have I ever had leftovers, sew I make my own clothes, dance really good at ballet, write something that my sisters have always had trouble with, paint my art teacher uses my paintings as examples, and make jewelry (not kiddie stuff with string and beads but more professional with wire and metals). No matter how hard I try it’s always why can’t you be more like your sisters, and ever since my mom told me how brilliant my brother is it replays itself in my ears forcing me to hear it everyday and since then I’ve been depressed and my grades have been suffering and I’ve been having really bad headaches, which I was looking up and somehow go to this stress symptoms list and out of 24 I have 19 symptoms. I know I’m stressed but again no one knows because I fear that they will think it is an excuse for my grades and this is the worst time ever to be stressed because state testing is coming up and I have always gotten proficient but now I am terrified of getting below average like I said used to be an A student but now I’m down to Ds and my parents have no idea because I have managed to hide it from them and I just feel so sad and confused and how do I stop being depressed and stressed? I’m sorry about the length but everything just came pouring out and I want to thank you for reading all of this I just had to tell someone.

  15. I’m a 15-year-old who loves life. I like to take walks for the sole purpose of seeing things, I love any form of art, I love learning and seeing new things, I love being open-minded. I’m a passionate person who loves to experience all that I can.

I really want someone to share this with. Unfortunately, I’m in high school, and it feels like majority of people my age are balls of hormones and nihilism who sit on Facebook or play video games all day. I want nothing more than a good friend, but I can’t find any. I go to a school that specializes in art, and I still have’t found anyone who shares my love of living. It makes me sad that my teachers are the worst. Teachers are some of the most unmotivated, depressed and unenthusiastic people I have ever met.

My only solution right now is to learn how to just be happy with myself. Does anyone have any tips on this, or on finding good friends?

Shes scared to sleep in it and she’s in the 5th grade! Shes just scared… So she wanted a makeover and she said if I did give a makeover to her room she’d sleep in it. I was thinking of buying new pillows and I asked my daughter if she had wanted any and she said anything would be good as long as it’s getting a makeover. I was also thinking of making the bed look like well, I don’t know. A couch. That’s it. Well, give me some ideas. She plays the piano, and she likes reading (not a lot though), she likes to ice skate though she falls down a lot, she absolutely LOVES to write and do arts and crafts and to play… Remember that I don’t want to spend much money and how about some paintings? But we can’t buy paint or anything… she likes drawing and she has drawn some. She put them right behind her bed on the wall. Her bed was in the corner. The bottom right corner from the door and her window is kind of in front of it above all her stuff. And her desk is on the top left corner if you just came in through the door. Her room isn’t all that big. Her sister has been trying to convince her lately. My daughter slept there the first few days of when we moved here a few years ago. The first day was great. So was the second. The third she had a stomachache and the fourth she couldn’t sleep which is not normal because she can always sleep! And this vacation she slept there 3 days in a row and now she won’t because that 4th day she couldn’t sleep. She wishes to paint her room and so does her sister but their dad, a carpenter, won’t hear of it. So any ideas? And any other ideas to make her room look so amazing that she’ll sleep in it for once in her life??? And please help because my mom is coming this Saturday and will kill me because she’s scared. And how should I sort the pillows and the junk she has? And the quilts? And my husband won’t build anything… because it’s ok to him. Well let’s help my daughter with overcoming her fear!

New radar evidence proves that the UFOs that were spotted and filmed by multiple witnesses in Stephenville, Texas not only existed but were as big as reports and as fast as reports. This story aired on Larry King Live, today.

The evidence for UFOs is becoming ridiculously hard to dismiss. There is enough video documentation and physical evidence to scientifically conclude that UFOs are a real phenomenon. Also, writing and paintings from the past depict UFOs, before any type of aircraft were invented. There is a time in history when photographs had been invented, but not air travel… Many intriguing photographs of UFOs exist from this period. So what’s the deal? It this just mass hallucinations?

Science.. it is a YouTube clip.. but it is a YouTube clip of The Larry King Live Show.. which I personally watched on television, about an hour ago. So I think the source is just fine, thanks.
Science, your logic is ridiculously flawed. I have three degrees, including a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science, and I am a student of logic. Everyone knows that you can create fake UFO videos, and there are people whose jobs are to go through UFO videos and pick out the ones that were created on a computer. It’s not hard. More than 10% of UFO Sightings are Literally unexplainable.

You’re made up percentage of the chance of extraterrestrial life existing was very funny. Especially since that calculation has already been made and more than 95% of Scientists believe that the odds of alien life existing on another planet SOMEWHERE in the universe are very good, mainly because of the size of the universe.

It’s really simple actually, there are tons of Sun-like stars in the universe and tons of Earth-like planets. It is only logical that one Sun-like star and Earth-like planet are relatively close enough to each other to support life.
It is funny that people are so mislead. You guys probably believe the Theory of Evolution is a fact, too. LOL. You’ll love my next question. 🙂
Evolution is proven?!!?!?!?!? LMFAO. Is that why Bigfoot is called The Missing Link.

If you believe that we evolved from monkeys, You Sir, are an idiot.

  28. Hey!
As a part of my GRE prep, I just finished an essay analyzing an issue. Please rate this essay critically out (0-6).Also,if possible, please let me know what makes you think this essay is not worthy of a higher score. Thanks a lot.
    TOPIC:
The true test of the greatness of a work of art is its ability to be understood by the masses.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
    ______________________________________…

It’s all about worth of the money these days.
    .
    .
Finally,I would say,a true test of the greatness of a work of art should be the art itself. For any great art piece, they are people who dislike it as much the fan base it would have.

  31. i really want to become more familiar
    with body/performance art.
i’d love it if you could answer these questions for me:

    – the main characteristics of the art movement
    – country of origin
    – approximate dates when they occurred
    – names of two main artists from body/performace art

    thanks heaps in advance!

And how should I sort the pillows and the junk she has? And the quilts? And my husband won’t build anything… because it’s ok to him. Well let’s help my daughter with overcoming her fear!

  41. My daughter wants a little makeover for her room but I told her I wasn’t going to spend any money. She said ok as long as I did well. I was thinking of having curtains above the bed. 43.

As a part of my GRE prep, I just finished an essay analyzing an issue. Please rate this essay critically out (0-6).Also,if possible, please let me know what makes you think this essay is not worthy of a higher score. Thanks a lot.
    TOPIC:
The true test of the greatness of a work of art is its ability to be understood by the masses.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
    ______________________________________…

It’s all about worth of the money these days.
    .
    .
Finally,I would say,a true test of the greatness of a work of art should be the art itself. For any great art piece, they are people who dislike it as much the fan base it would have.

It’s all about worth of the money these days.
    .
    .
Finally,I would say,a true test of the greatness of a work of art should be the art itself. For any great art piece, they are people who dislike it as much the fan base it would have.

  63. My daughter wants a little makeover for her room but I told her I wasn’t going to spend any money. She said ok as long as I did well. I was thinking of having curtains above the bed. Well let’s help my daughter with overcoming her fear!
but how do you make lamp shades?

How did you feel about the game?

if so what where the effects ?
and also what do you feel caused this (don’t worry if u dnt wana answer this one)

and on a much better note, my chemical romance ?
people say mcr saved their life, have they saved yours if so why/how ?

Ooh yeh. whats the most random thing you know about my chemical romance ?
if you dont then just say something about the band idk

this may all seem random. but i have to write this book and it all links in 🙂

oooh! BQ: whats ur fav mcr video/ song and why (:

O.o i think i need to cut down the caffiene my hands are shaking.

  72. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cBe9uBVwF8

It this just mass hallucinations?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cBe9uBVwF8
Science.. it is a YouTube clip.. but it is a YouTube clip of The Larry King Live Show.. which I personally watched on television, about an hour ago.
