Scientists in the Philippines have discovered a plant that can absorb large amounts of metal without itself being poisoned, a species called the Rinorea niccolifera, that can be used to clean up polluted soils and harvest commercially viable metals.

The plant is one of only 450 species, known as hyperaccumulator plants, of 300,000 known vascular plants that can absorb significant amounts of metal though their roots.

The lead researcher and author of a new study on the plant, Professor Edwino Fernando, from the University of the Philippines, said the leaves of the Rinorea niccolifera can absorb up to 18,000 parts per million of nickel, 1,000 times more than can be safely absorbed by any other known plant.

Fernando along with Dr. Marilyn Quimado and their team laid out the details of their discovery in the open access journal PhytoKeys.

The new species was discovered on the western part of Luzon Island in the Philippines, an area known for soils rich in heavy metals,” the researchers said in a press release announcing their discovery.

As well as being an exciting new scientific discovery, the plant also has important environmental credentials. Rinorea niccolifera can remove large amounts of dangerous metallic metals from polluted ecosystems, and subsequently it is likely to find supporters in the mining industry. Not only can the plants absorb large amounts of nickel, they can also then be harvested for the metal they have absorbed.

Hyperaccumulator plants have great potentials for the development of green technologies, for example, ‘phytoremediation’ and ‘phytomining’,” Augustine Doronila, of the University of Melbourne, who co-authored the study, said.

‘Phytoremediation’ is a term used to describe how hyperaccumulator plants remove heavy metals from contaminated soils.

‘Phytomining’ refers to the process where hyperaccumulator plants are used to grow and harvest commercially viable metals in plant shoots from metal rich soils.

  1. I’ll be going to college in the school year 2009-2010, so I’m already listing the names of the universities / colleges where I would take the entrance exams. I’m looking for the quality of the education and the facilities. Plus, it would also be good if they offer a scholarship program without checking the background of the student. (Because in some, they only offer it to the less fortunate). Thank you!

Do you know if there are any universities from the Philippines that accept students from abroad? coz u know, the curriculum is way different 🙁

  7. Here in the Philippines, the passing mark in university is 70% (75% in some schools). In Canada, they use a 50% passing rate. I’m planning to transfer to a university in Canada (finish the rest of my BA degree there) and while I know that only the school itself can make the final decision, I just wanted to get a better idea on how the grading system in the Philippines compares to the Canadian system. 70% (letter grade: D) is equivalent to what in a Canadian university, is it equal to 70% (a 70% in Canada is around a B letter grade?) still?
IF what “Herzo” says it’s true (btw, what’s your source? :), then what would a 75-80% (in Philippine grades) be equivalent to in a Canadian university?

  8. ok so im gonna be a sophmore this year and i was born and raised in the us but im 100 % filipino, my parents said that i should go to school in the philippines , but i want to finish high school here and see what colleges i get accepted to…….. so anyways when should i take the UPCAT? and is it hard? it says that one of the requirements is a weighted average of final grades obtained in high school…wtf? does this mean i have save all my report cards since freshman year? also another requirement:A total combined score of 1200 for the verbal and mathematics subtests in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T) will also qualify an applicant for admission as freshman to the University. .. so does this mean the sat counts?? my dad says if i got to school in manila , that theres alot of bad people there..lol what does he mean by that?? (addicts?) lol so i told him ill carry pepper spray….. what kind of things do they test on in the UPCAT? i heard filipino grammar… if thats right then idk how im gonna pass i barely know tagalog all i know is illokano.

  9. Are there any Universities/Colleges in Philippines that don’t make it mandatory for a student to take Filipino, History and PE classes? Also, do they acknowledge IGCSE’s?

Hypothetically, if I was to finish my AS Levels, could I avoid having to take Filipino, History (Social Studies) and PE classes?

In general, I was wondering if it would be better to go for University AFTER I’ve taken my IGCSE’s (which, at sixteen, would put me in the same age as my would-be peers) or after I’ve taken my AS Levels (Grade 12)? If I do finish till Grade 12, I would be eighteen and older than my college-mates. Personally, I don’t really mind. It’s just that my father seems to think of the age thing as a big deal. :/

  10. Hi,

I am residing in the US and i would just like to make an inquiry regarding the best schools in Manila. I have Filipino blood and since we have relatives in Manila, I would like my daughter to pursue her college education in The Philippines that is aside from being affordable, she will be able to share and broaden her ancestral background and ideas. She wishes to pursue business and most of my colleagues say, I could send her to La Salle or Ateneo. Others said UP is also a very good option.

However, I would like to get more feedbacks regarding this matter. Thank you.

    Hoping for your helpful response,
    Chris

  14. Moreover, what are the job opportunities available for those who finished BS Chemistry. What are the big companies in the Philippines that they can apply at? WHat are the advantages of getting an MS degree in Chemistry?

  15. What do you think is the best college/university in terms of the quality of education strictly imposed by the deans and professors? I need to decide where will I study in college and I prefer only here in Metro Manila or somewhere in Luzon. tnx..

  16. Which is better?
I’m a senior in high school and I’m kind of freaking out.
If I’m going to the Philippines I would most likely go to DLSU-Manila.
I’ve been living in America for almost five years now, but I’m not a citizen. My dad works for the government, so as long as he’s working here I can go back and forth.

My parents don’t want me to go to a university because it’s expensive and we don’t have a co-signer. (Well, my aunt could be a co-signer, but my dad doesn’t want to ask her such a huge favor that involves thousands of doollars.)
My dad’s not a citizen. He has an A2 visa and so do I.

  23. German scientists dug 50 meters underground and discovered small pieces of copper. After studying these pieces for a long time, Germany announced that the ancient Germans 25,000 years ago had a nation-wide telephone network.

Naturally, the British government was not that easily impressed. They ordered their own scientists to dig even deeper. 100 meters down, they found small pieces of glass, and they soon announced that the ancient Brits 35,000 years ago already had a nation-wide fibre net.

Israeli scientists were outraged. They dug 50, 100 and 200 meters underground, but found absolutely nothing…

They concluded that the ancient Hebrews 55,000 years ago had cellular telephones.

  30. Hi guys,

just wondering whether anyone of you has any experience with studying at private university in Philippines.

Is this destination any good for a guy from Europe?

I’ve already looked to the possibility to study a BA course in Thailand, but before I make up my mind, I would like to factor in also universities in Philippines.

What I am most concerned about is the legal option to work there while I am studying.
Further, could you give me some tips or references to websites / fora that deal with study in Philippines?

    Thanks a lot,

    jirikoo

From what I’ve read, I have to contact APMC (Association of Philippine Medical College) but I can’t find any contact details. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Just wondering why are the fees so cheap? Like 50 pesos per unit? I dont get it!
So if i was to apply for a course there, around how much would it be all together?
I come from the UK and thinking about studying there, if that helps.
If there is any other information about TUP you know would be helpful 🙂
    Thank you!

  37. Hi. I am an 18 year old female. I graduated high school in the Philippines two years ago. I’m currently residing in the U.S but planning on going back to the P.I. on September to go to college.

I just wanted to know what I can do to get in the University of the Philippines. I know you have to pass some sort of test to be able to get in. And I also wanted to know if it’s possible to take the test online or have them mail the test to me.

Well, basically, I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO TO GET INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES. And if it’s possible to do my applications whilst I’m in the U.S. Thanks so much.

I didn’t get a huge amount of federal loans so I am currently using private loans. I don’t think I will be able to take more loans and have a debt of about 100,000 after I graduate and I have been thinking of transferring to much cheaper university. My mother is from the Philippines and I have several family members there so that was the first thing that came to my mind. I also have a friend who goes to De La Salle University and he only has to pay about a 1,000 dollars for a year. Going to the Philippines for my undergrad seems like a really good idea. Should I do it? I mean when I come back to the US (or I might stay there, who knows), would I get a job fairly quickly?

Basically, is it a good investment to stay at a uni in the US or save my money for grad school and go to a uni in the Philippines? What will be my job prospects if I have a degree from there?

Please tell me why and make sure it’s not something like ‘because I say so’ or something. Please, if possible, add some information about the school like about the teachers, students, dress code, campus, events held, etc.

thanks guys keep it coming.. what else is there?

  69. I am currently a sophomore at University of Illinois (Chambana) studying Accounting. Since I am out of state, I am currently paying 25,000 (after scholarships) which I have to pay using loans.

  71. I’m a Geman citizen but i want to study college here in your country whats the best university i can enroll and has a cheaper tution fee for foreign students,

  72. How much are the usual/average fees for courses in the Philippines?
I know it might vary depending on which course your’e taking, but I was just wondering how much in pesos? Maybe you attend a university in the Philippines, how much do you pay?

    Thanks 🙂

From what I’ve read, I have to contact APMC (Association of Philippine Medical College) but I can’t find any contact details. Any information would be greatly appreciated

  76. I’m a fourth year high school student and I’m starting to think of the best university when I go to college. And also some good courses to choose from. Thanks!

(addicts?) lol so i told him ill carry pepper spray….. what kind of things do they test on in the UPCAT? i heard filipino grammar… if thats right then idk how im gonna pass i barely know tagalog all i know is illokano.

  78. (oh the question mark shouldn’t be there after “thanks”. sorry about that)

  79. I have to write a paper about a theoretical Nobel Prize nominee, but I can’t find any great discoveries in the area of Science or Medicine.

  95. I live near an abandoned house that was abandoned since 1925 and it was not tore down because the people who died while living there still had their name paying for the house. Nobody could take it out. I went inside the house yesterday because I heard some creepy noises the night before that, sleeping with my window open. And it was coming from that house. It is only a two room house. Here is the picture of the house: http://media.photobucket.com/image/ghost%20picture/bikercat/Window0.jpg?o=58
I drew arrows before putting it on photobucket so you can see the two things that only showed up on my camera. I think they are ghosts. But that was just the living room here is the really scary thing. I couldn’t add it on my account so I used my other photobucket account because the new account said something that I couldn’t download it on that account. WARNING: This is really, really shocking: http://media.photobucket.com/image/ghost%20picture/dudu_1/Picture.jpg?o=8
I actually seen a pitch black man as black as a shadow running away from me and went into the clean room and I chased it. When I went in the clean room I only seen that watching me from the bed just standing there and looking at me. I ran away fast damn it was scary.
I called them ghosts on the picture names because I think they are ghosts

  96. I am a college student in America, and would like to continue studying in the Philippines for nursing, since the wait list here is too long. I know that the school year has already started in the Philippines, but I was wondering if the universities over there take in second semester tranferees, because I would really like to transfer as soon as possible because i dont want to waste a whole year. Also, which are good schools for nursing in the Philippines?

  97. Hi guys,

just wondering whether anyone of you has any experience with studying at private university in Philippines.

  146. Hi, so I’m a junior in high school in America and I’m planning to move to the Philippines to take up dentistry. I would like to go to the university of the east. How does it work there my questions are basically
    1) Do I have to take the entrance exam? Sorry I might sound stupid asking that but I’m not sure
    2) Upon entering what do I do there? Is it better having dual citizenship for the U.S. And Philippines?
    3) what are the pre-dental courses offered at UE
Those are my basic questions please help

  147. i ‘m planning to spend an exchange semester at a University in the Philippines. So i’m glad about every suggestion i get. Thank you in advance. 🙂

  148. How would I make the transition?
Is University life in the Philippines similar to English?

I’m half filipino and have some houses over there in Manila and Davao.

  149. On this page – http://www.tup.edu.ph/page.php?id=admissions&subid=fees

Just wondering why are the fees so cheap? Like 50 pesos per unit? I dont get it!
So if i was to apply for a course there, around how much would it be all together?
I come from the UK and thinking about studying there, if that helps.
If there is any other information about TUP you know would be helpful 🙂
    Thank you!

  150. I am interested in continuing my medical training (post-grad internship) in the Philippines but I can’t find much information on the internet. From what I’ve read, I have to contact APMC (Association of Philippine Medical College) but I can’t find any contact details. Any information would be greatly appreciated

  152. I’m a fourth year high school student and I’m starting to think of the best university when I go to college. And also some good courses to choose from. Thanks!

  153. the word “therapist” is ONE SPACE AWAY from becoming “The Rapist”.

10 points to whoever has the funniest explanation.
i don’t know what squidbillies is, and i had no idea someone else thought of this first =(

  154. Thank you!

  157. Hey, I want to take up medicine for college and I want to go to University of the Philippines. It’s a highly-selective school and I want to know how to raise my chances. 🙁 pls help

  158. Ok, so I’ve been thinking, and i realized that spongebob squarepants pants are not square at all! THEY ARE ACTUALLY A RECTANGLE! shocking.. i know! so why is his last name “squarepants”, if his pants arent square at all? so it should be spongebob RECTANGLEpants. oh and btw… how does one live in a pineapple under the sea?

I am taking my SATs later on in the year, what score would be sufficient to get in?

(in case, you’re wondering why I would like to study in the PI as oppose to the US, it’s because I want to become a politician in the Philippines in hopes of decreasing corruption and oppression…)

  166. ok so im gonna be a sophmore this year and i was born and raised in the us but im 100 % filipino, my parents said that i should go to school in the philippines , but i want to finish high school here and see what colleges i get accepted to…….. so anyways when should i take the UPCAT? and is it hard? it says that one of the requirements is a weighted average of final grades obtained in high school…wtf? does this mean i have save all my report cards since freshman year? also another requirement:A total combined score of 1200 for the verbal and mathematics subtests in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (S.A.T) will also qualify an applicant for admission as freshman to the University. .. so does this mean the sat counts?? my dad says if i got to school in manila , that theres alot of bad people there..lol what does he mean by that?? (addicts?) lol so i told him ill carry pepper spray….. what kind of things do they test on in the UPCAT? i heard filipino grammar… if thats right then idk how im gonna pass i barely know tagalog all i know is illokano.

just wondering whether anyone of you has any experience with studying at private university in Philippines.

  180. Azan : An incredible medium for the proclamation of Tawheed of the Almighty ALLAH ta’ala & Risalat of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the sound of which echoes around the globe. Amazing though it sounds, but fortunately for the Muslims of the world, it is an established fact.
Have a look at a map of the world & you will find Indonesia [a Muslim country] right on the eastern side of the earth’s central land mass. Indonesia consists of many numerous islands, the principle ones being Java, Sumatra, Borneo & Celebes, all of which are well known. It is the largest Muslim country in the world with 180 million inhabitants.
As soon as dawn breaks on the eastern island of Celebes, at approximately 5.30 am local time, Fajr Azan begins.Thousands of Mu’azzins in eastern Indonesia commence proclaiming the Tawheed [Oneness] of the Almighty, Omnipotent and Omniscient ALLAH ta’ala and Risalat [Universal Apostleship] of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The process then continues & advances towards the western islands of Indonesia. The time difference between the eastern & western islands of Indonesia in one & a half hrs. Hence, one & a half hrs after the echoes has been completed in Celebes, it echoes in Jakarta & Java island. Sumatra then follows suit & before this auspicious process of calling Azan ends in Indonesia, it has already begun in Malaysia. Burma is then next in line, & within an hr of its commencement in Jakarta, it reaches Dacca, the capital of Bangladesh. No sooner the calling of Azan ends in Bangladesh, it has already prevailed in western India, from Calcutta to Luknow. It then advances towards to Bombay & the environment of entire India resounds with this glorious proclamation.
Srinagar & Sialkot [a city in north Pakistan] have the same timing for Azan. The difference between Sialkot, Kota, Karachi & Gowadar [a city in Baluchistan, a province of Pakistan] is forty minutes, & within this time, Fajr Azan is heard throughout Pakistan. Before it ends in Pakistan, it has already begun in Afghanistan and Muscat. The time difference between Muscat & Baghdad is one hour. Azan resounds during this one hour in the environments of Hijaz-e-Muquaddas, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait & Iraq.
The time difference between Baghdad & Alexandra in Egypt is again one hour. Azan continues to resound in Syria, Jordan Saudi Arabia, Somalia & Sudan during this hour. Alexandria & Istanbul [the principal city of Turkey] are situated on the same geographical longitude. The time difference between eastern & western Turkey in one & half hours, & during this time it is echoed with the call to prayer. Alexandra & Tripoli [the capital of Libya] are located at an hour’s difference from one another. It continues into Algiers, Tunis, Rabat & Marrakech. The process of calling Azan thus continues throughout the whole of Africa.
There4 the proclamation of the Oneness of ALLAH ta’ala and the Apostleship of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that had begun in the eastern islands of Indonesia reaches the eastern shores of the Atlantic ocean after 9 hrs. Prior to the Azan reaching the shores of the Atlantic, the process of Zuhr Azan has already commenced in eastern Indonesia, & before it reaches Dacca, Asr Azan has started. This has hardly reached Jakarta, one & a half hrs later, then the time for Maghrib becomes due & no sooner has Mahgrib time reached Sumatra, then the time for Isha Azan has commenced in Celebes! When the Mu’azzins of Indonesia are calling out Fajr Azan, the Mu’azzins in Africa are calling out the Azan for Isha.
If we ponder over this phenomenon seriously, we can only conclude the amazing fact that thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of Mu’azzins around the world are always proclaiming the Oneness of Almighty ALLAH ta’ala and the Apostleship of the noble Prophet (SAW) Insha’ALLAH ta’ala, this universal & continuos calling of the Azan shall continue until the Day of Judgement. Ameen.
All praise be to ALLAH ta’ala. Taken from Riyadh ul Jannah [translated by Hafiz Ghulam Muhammad Bora].

  185. I am currently a sophomore at University of Illinois (Chambana) studying Accounting. Since I am out of state, I am currently paying 25,000 (after scholarships) which I have to pay using loans.

  195. Thank you!

  198. Apparently, a lost sentence from the bible has been discovered today, it says “Those from a place called Leeds are worshippers of the devil, as well as those given ginger hair. These people need to be extincted according to God himself”

What are your thoughts on this amazing discovery?

  199. Hi guys,

just wondering whether anyone of you has any experience with studying at private university in Philippines.

    Thanks a lot,

    jirikoo

  200. Hey, I want to take up medicine for college and I want to go to University of the Philippines. It’s a highly-selective school and I want to know how to raise my chances. 🙁 pls help

  203. I’m thinking of going to UP Manila or Ateneo de Manila. It says on their sites that they only look at you’re GPA and entrance exam scores (or SAT scores). Is that really true? Do they also consider community service work, recommendation letters, talent, extracurricular activities, interview, or anything else like that?

  204. I’m a fourth year high school student and I’m starting to think of the best university when I go to college. And also some good courses to choose from. Thanks!

  205. .
    How about this one:

“And no man drinketh old wine and then straightway desireth new wine, for he knoweth the old wine is better.” Luke 5:39

Do you know of a more amazing discovery of his? If you do let’s have it. Thanks.

  208. I was sitting in my room reading the Bible for the bazillionth time, and I noticed something interesting. God created plants before he created the sun (clearly stated in Genesis)! Interesting because those liar scientists say that plants need sun to live. This is clearly not true. These atheists keep trying to shove their satanic lies down our throat, but this is proof that they are wrong. The Bible is the undeniable work of God and according to the Bible plants don’t need the sun to live. Repent sinners, eternity is a long time!
That’s another great point Antie. God made light before he made the sun!
What else are these devils up to

  217. Hey.

I was planning to continue my studies in Manila, Philippines and I was wondering what are the top Universities or what is the top University there? Do you think these trains are re-emitting that same Carbon Dioxide and Pollution all over again into our atmosphere while I am watching the video footage?
If we would just run the video backwards…PRESTO…we solved all the Carbon emissions and pollution from the trains. Your thoughts on my discovery please.
The purpose of this question is to illustrate the RADICAL MINDSET of the nut jobs that keep wanting to destroy the world we live in, people like AlGore…for example. LOL…

  242. okay… so usually when I sit with my leg curled under me, it goes numb (betnammel) really fast

so.. today I’m wearing skater shoes (cause I was taking my dad’s camel -pajero- to get it cleaned) and I’m sitting w my foot under me, and it’s totally fine…

why? Because the sneakers prevents me min ino af3as-ha (squish it)

there you go… that’s why I never had this problem in college, I always wore sneakers!

  258. I am currently a sophomore at University of Illinois (Chambana) studying Accounting. Since I am out of state, I am currently paying 25,000 (after scholarships) which I have to pay using loans.

  273. Hey.

I was planning to continue my studies in Manila, Philippines and I was wondering what are the top Universities or what is the top University there? Please tell me why and make sure it’s not something like ‘because I say so’ or something. Please, if possible, add some information about the school like about the teachers, students, dress code, campus, events held, etc.

    Thank you! 🙂

  276. i ‘m planning to spend an exchange semester at a University in the Philippines. So i’m glad about every suggestion i get. Thank you in advance. 🙂

  308. Which is better?
I’m a senior in high school and I’m kind of freaking out.

God made light before he made the sun!

wow that sound so cool! deffinatly the trainer package!

I’m looking for the quality of the education and the facilities. Plus, it would also be good if they offer a scholarship program without checking the background of the student. (Because in some, they only offer it to the less fortunate). Thank you!

just wondering whether anyone of you has any experience with studying at private university in Philippines.

Please tell me why and make sure it’s not something like ‘because I say so’ or something. Please, if possible, add some information about the school like about the teachers, students, dress code, campus, events held, etc.

    Thank you! 🙂

  361. I live in America. Im a junior and I have a 3.6 GPA plus extracurriculars.
I am taking my SATs later on in the year, what score would be sufficient to get in?

(in case, you’re wondering why I would like to study in the PI as oppose to the US, it’s because I want to become a politician in the Philippines in hopes of decreasing corruption and oppression…)

  364. I am currently a sophomore at University of Illinois (Chambana) studying Accounting. Since I am out of state, I am currently paying 25,000 (after scholarships) which I have to pay using loans.

    Thank you! 🙂

What do you think of that?

Well, basically, I JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO TO GET INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES. And if it’s possible to do my applications whilst I’m in the U.S. Thanks so much.

  404. I am currently a sophomore at University of Illinois (Chambana) studying Accounting. Since I am out of state, I am currently paying 25,000 (after scholarships) which I have to pay using loans.

    1) Do I have to take the entrance exam? Sorry I might sound stupid asking that but I’m not sure
    2) Upon entering what do I do there? Is it better having dual citizenship for the U.S. And Philippines?
    3) what are the pre-dental courses offered at UE
Those are my basic questions please help

Do you think it’s a good theory?

  434. Open your eyes.
    We’re high above the ground.
They’re all looking up at us now.
    Don’t be afraid,
    You’re safe in my arms.
    High in the air,
I can keep you from harm.
    The birds are your playmates,
    The clouds are your bed.
The rain smells so sweet from up here,
The seasons change the treetops from green to red.
At night the moon shines bright,
    And the stars twinkle soft.
    Below the world is asleep,
Not a sound in the night.
But the whisper of the wind runs through,
Singing an angels song of sleep.

Ameen.

I have used it in the most noble way possible, changing myself into hot girl’s boyfriends and sleeping with them! Maybe the last time you were with your boyfriend or husband, you were really with me! What do you think of that?

  445. Here, Yahoo Answers.
    I just join in.
Is little late for me, but… Hello, Everyone !!!
